Martyn Hansford, Head Coach
I began my life in the sport of football/soccer as a player in Birmingham, England. Having played the game at a high level as a youth player I went on to play for Liverpool John Moores University and as a semi-pro player for several clubs in England. I began coaching in my early twenties working with several schools and programs in the Birmingham area. In 2001 I took the opportunity to coach in Orange County, California providing coaching education programs and as a director of residential and non-residential camps. I also worked as an athletic performance trainer both in Newport Beach and Del Mar and as a PE teacher in Carlsbad. I have coached for Orange County and San Diego clubs for 18 years including five years as director of coaching. I have overseen several high school programs. Newport Harbor High School, Escondido High School, San Dieguito Academy and now in my 10th year at Torrey Pines High School. During my tenure at Torrey Pines we have continued the strong tradition of excellence on and off the field, including back to back CIF Open Division titles, multiple League Titles and winning Butch Lee Tournaments!
Our dedicated staff and volunteers help provides a unique education and experience of the game for our students. As well as expert insight and guidance we install a togetherness in the girls and qualities that will serve them well on and off the field in their future endeavors. I am excited for the upcoming season and look forward to the progress of all three levels, meeting our new freshmen and a having a great last year with our graduating seniors.

I am originally from Los Angeles, CA and have played soccer throughout high school, college, and also at the semi-professional level all over Southern California. I have been coaching since 2014 and am currently also coaching at a college in San Diego. This will be my second year at Torrey Pines and I am excited to help lead the program towards another successful season.

My coaching philosophy focuses on the person as much as the player and I challenge myself to find the inner athlete. I believe my innate ability to bring out in each player, particularly young girls, the hidden athlete within and teach them to unwrap all their gifts. My connection with the players I coach allows me to make each young player's personality come to life. I care deeply about the person within and work to find the interconnection between player and coach. I will challenge the girls to define and appreciate the dividends of their hard work in a healthy, competitive environment, always encouraging both academic and athletic growth. Relationships are everything in sports and life! I value team chemistry that is built on consistent support, trust and respect of each individual. The sport of soccer has had the greatest influence on every aspect of my life and I am grateful to be able to give back to a game that gave me so much.
